CNN and Careerbuilder just published an article on ten jobs that pay around $80,000 per year , such as attorneys, economists, associate actuaries, marketing managers, pharmacists, and veterinarians. The trouble with all of these jobs is that with rare exceptions they require a four-year college degree or more than that. But there is an 11th job that pays in the same…

We all know that Wal-Mart is obsessed with saving money, but this is a little absurd. According the the Saint Louise Post Dispatch Political Fix blog, instead of hedging their bets and contributing to both candidates for Missouri Governor (an oft used tactic among companies), they waited to see who won and then donated $10,000 to the winning candidate's campaign. Obama will need to resist the temptation and pressure every president feels to offer his own formula for peace. No magic formula exists. He will be wise to let the parties negotiate while making clear that he will do what he can to ensure that a Palestinian state is created that does not threaten Israel's security and that the rest of the Arab world supports an end to the conflict.

One of the more fascinating projects in the world of urban planning is Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It will be an sustainable municipality with zero-carbon and zero-waste relying completely on renewable sources. Cars will be banned, and a personal rapid transit system will replace them, running on batteries powered by solar energy. Streets in Masdar City will be flanked by tall buildings to shade most of the city and minimize need for air conditioning. The city is scheduled for completion near 2014.

According to a review in the Wall Street Journal , a fellow named Alex Beam has written a book about the Great Books of the Western World, the 54-volume collection of major writings that was published by Encyclop?a Britannica in 1952. I haven't read the book, so I find it difficult to discern where the review reflects Mr. Beam's attitude and where it expresses the reviewer's. One or the other of them, or both, is occasionally a little snarky about the GBWW enterprise. Why?
