Obama will need to resist the temptation and pressure every president feels to offer his own formula for peace.
No magic formula exists.
He will be wise to let the parties negotiate while making clear that he will do what he can to ensure that a Palestinian state is created that does not threaten Israel's security and that the rest of the Arab world supports an end to the conflict.

One of the more fascinating projects in the world of urban planning is Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It will be an sustainable municipality with zero-carbon and zero-waste relying completely on renewable sources.
Cars will be banned, and a personal rapid transit system will replace them, running on batteries powered by solar energy. Streets in Masdar City will be flanked by tall buildings to shade most of the city and minimize need for air conditioning.
The city is scheduled for completion near 2014.

At the end of the day and at this moment in time, I personally feel that, with all due respect, it's not rocket science.
Blame the self-important bombast of business, government, the media, and academia for the existence of a sentence such as the preceding one, cobbled from half of the ten most overused, and most useless, expressions in English.
Read on for the other half ...

According to a review in the Wall Street Journal , a fellow named Alex Beam has written a book about the Great Books of the Western World, the 54-volume collection of major writings that was published by Encyclop?a Britannica in 1952.
I haven't read the book, so I find it difficult to discern where the review reflects Mr. Beam's attitude and where it expresses the reviewer's. One or the other of them, or both, is occasionally a little snarky about the GBWW enterprise.
Why?

Britannica has received the following note from "Operation Survivor":
"Today is Veteran's Day, and our troops need our help now. Which is why I'm asking you to honor their service by blogging about Survivor Corps' program for U.S. veterans and service members, Operation Survivor. I've put together this informational microsite which explains everything: http://survivorcorps.org/returningtroops .
"The traumatic effects of war, left unaddressed, will have far-reaching negative consequences for service members, their families, and their communities. Based on our ten years of global experience helping survivors of conflict overcome trauma and give back to their communities, Survivor Corps founded Operation Survivor to provide the same kind of life-changing support to American veterans and service members."

Blogging is now more than a decade old, and the medium continues to provoke sharply contrasting assessments from critics and boosters. The past few weeks have seen two of the most eloquent commentaries yet on the blogging enterprise, a deeply personal paean from Andrew Sullivan and a diagnosis of "midlife crisis" from Nicholas Carr.
They're diametrically opposed, but both worth reading.

Blogging seems to have entered its midlife crisis, with much existential gnashing-of-teeth about the state and fate of a literary form that once seemed new and fresh and now seems familiar and tired.
And there's good reason for the teeth-gnashing.
While there continue to be many blogs, including a lot of very good ones, it seems to me that one would be hard pressed to make the case that there's still a "blogosphere." That vast, free-wheeling, and surprisingly intimate forum where individual writers shared their observations, thoughts, and arguments outside the bounds of the traditional media is gone.

Every fashionable woman - at some point in her existence - has suffered in order to look unfailingly glamorous. But there quickly comes a point where that gets to be completely ridiculous.
Now, it's glorious to have eye-catching shoes. They can make you feel powerful, sexy or beautiful. But looking great shouldn't really be a prerequisite to your own demise.
Take these torture pumps, for example . . .

Social and religious conservatives celebrated last week the passage of measures that ban same-sex marriage in California, Arizona and Florida.
Non-married couples were banned from being foster parents in Arkansas.
In an election year where acceptance of individual differences is a fundamental part of the "change" so many are seeking, the banning of marriage between same-sex partners reflects a decline in the understanding of and an appreciation for healthy, loving relationships.

This may strike some readers as levity, but I assure you, the critics are out there, not losing a moment. And I mean harsh critics:
At least two "Impeach Obama" groups have popped up on one of those inane "social web" sites that I decline to name, and I found an online site from which to order "Impeach Obama" bumperstickers - $3.95 apiece if you pride yourself on your individuality but only about two bucks six bits in quantities of 250 or more to those organizing for action.
A plausible theory for such people would be that we know he's going to do something we absolutely hate as soon as he can, so we might as well exploit this pre-inaugural period to gain some momentum.

Some 90% and 98% of library users today assume that they can get all of the information they need just by doing a search on Google.
This means that even teachers and students--whose jobs and degrees depend on trust and accuracy--in addition to ordinary Internet users, turn to search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo) as their first, and perhaps only , destination for information.
This automatic reliance on Internet search engines occurs in spite of the likelihood that the best or most reliable information may not be freely available on the Internet, but rather behind firewalls on premium sites that have been written, researched, vetted, and compiled by scholars, researchers, and other knowledge professionals.

President-elect Barack Obama sponsored a Senate bill to require that the shareholders of all public United States companies vote on whether they want say on pay. This means that it could very well be on the agenda in 2009.
On Thursday morning, James Keyes will be joined by a fantastic panel to discuss the future of say-on pay and corporate governance reform. Info below:
